How to Incorporate Poetry into your classroom
Post poems around the classroom
Have students create biopoems to introduce themselves to the class
Introduce a mysterious picture on the overhead and allow students to write a poem about the picture.
Using pictures or photos related to the poem, have students take the pictures and create a poem album
Do a class poem
Share your own poetry
Introducing a new poem every week to generate a collection of poems to work with
Using music and lyrics, listening to and having students write their own
Creating documents with hyperlink texts or having students work in collaborative groups on one document
Using poetry websites to have students search for new/old works and poets that they enjoy.
Using the websites have students research and read about poets and their works
Have the class create their very own poetry webpage, displaying all their work.
Have each student find a poem they like and make a class poetry collection
Have students act out poetry in the classroom through movement and the theatrical arts.
Reading the poetry out loud or in groups/teams
Starting small from personal to more complex poetry
Posters of poetry in the classroom and other types of visual aides
Incorporate multicultural poetry as well as those from poets who are relatively young in age
Classic poetry can be rough, so keep it fresh by reading various poets, works and possibly incorporating media into this area.
Poetry can now be found on audiotapes/cds which are a wonderful way to listen/read poetry and to experience it. Finding poetry read by the original author can be a very intimate and entertaining experience for students.
